In the year 1954, Biology department was established under the headship of Dr. P.S. Karekar.
In 1955, Dr. Nymphea Correa nee Almeida took charge of biology department when Dr. Karekar was transferred to Fergusson College,Pune
In1968, Botany was taken as subsidiary subject for interscience and in 1971 the department started functioning independently for undergraduate course
Dr. Mrs. Nymphea Correa Headed the department till she retired in 1990. Dr.Correa has co authored books on morphology and biology topics for interscience.
Dr. Miss Suhas G. Tungare was the next Head of the department till she retired in 1993.
Dr. Mrs. Vandana P. Sathe took over the charge of headship and she is leading the department till today.
Department has 6 sanctioned and approved posts for teaching faculty. At present there are 5 doctoral staff members in the department.
Department has two laboratories which are well equipped with modern instruments like Vertical Laminar air flow cabinet, digital microscope, electric food drier, visualizers, electrophoresis apparatus etc.
For the study purpose we have a small botanical garden, collection of potted medicinal plants, well maintained museum collection of wet as well as dry specimens, herbarium and microscope slides. Charts and photograph collection
Small department library is maintained with books in English as well as Marathi having large collection of horticulture and gardening
Department conducts certificate course in Horticultural Practices for interested students and community. It is a short duration nursery and gardening skill course suitable for city environment. Thus department is involved in environmental awareness and capacity building initiatives for students and citizens. Alumni supports us in such initiatives.
Students are motivated and guided for undertaking small research project activities for intercollegiate and Marathi Vidnyan Parishad competetions. Avishkar research festival of University of Mumbai
- Department extends its activities to the society by offering a Certificate course on Horticultural practices to people including senior citizens and retired persons of the neighborhood.
- Department is a pioneer and resource center of Bottle Garden which is now introduced in the university curriculum.
- Organized workshop on Bottle garden for the teachers of University of Mumbai.
- Dr. Smita Jadhav is member of Board of Studies.
- Dr. U.S.Sarkar is recipient of various awards including Smt. “Savitribai Phule Adarsh Shikshika” for women empowerment instituted by University of Mumbai. (2009).
- Our student Ms. Anamika Lad was awarded the Best N.S.S Volunteer award for the year 2006 of University of Mumbai.
- Our alumnus Mr. Rajesh Desai was felicitated by the times group and the society for his valuable contribution to save the people lives during 26th July 2005 heavy rain flood in Mumbai.
- Department has 50 years old Herbaria which include rare and specific plant species.
- To facilitate propagation unit, Polyhouse is developed which is an additional infrastructure.
- Department took initiative to establish Entrepreneurship Development Cell (E. D. Cell) in the college, Programs organized under this cell are managed by the students.
- As a part of extension activity department conducted workshops on Fruit and vegetable processing for women in the community.
- Department also implemented year marked programs like Paryavaran Sapthah, Botany Week and Sadbhavana Sapthah as extension activities.
- Under Earn While Learn program, four S.Y.BSc students were financially benefited for assisting the organization of certificate course.
- We motivate our Students to participate in inter collegiate competitions.
- As part of innovative teaching and learning methods along with LCD & OHP, Slide projector, Group discussion, Debate and Seminars are also conducted.
- Organize Parents teachers meeting for the betterment of the student’s performance.
- Department has its own library which has around 380 books which run by the students under the supervision of Head of the Department.
- Remedial courses for weaker students and Bridge course for the students of F Y B Sc are conducted as and when required.
- Continuous Assessment through periodic tests, Unit tests for T.Y.B.Sc students.
- Supportive stand of department towards non- teaching staffs during the crisis in the form of moral or financial support.
- Department encourages non-teaching staff to participate in inter – collegiate competition and Training program.
- As an innovative method of learning, a competition is conducted on presentation of processed fruit products in addition to the usual evaluation of organoleptic test.
- Department shared its human resources and instruments with other department for the completion of Minor research projects.
- Department regularly organized excursions & field visits, subject related intra-collegiate competitions, workshops, Guest lectures – Slide shows and group discussions related to the subject for the students.
- From last three years department organizing ‘Flora fest’, the event organize by students under the guidance of teachers.
- Department has provided teaching experience to their past students who are post graduates and eligible for C.H.B. appointments.
- Department maintains a small Botanical garden in college campus which includes some rare species of plants.
- Nine minor research projects were completed, out of which three projects were interdisciplinary.
- Involvement of staff members in the organization of National/State/University level Conference, Workshops & Seminars in college as well as in other college.
- All staff members from the department are involved in the conduct of T.Y.B. Sc, University exams as Chairperson / Paper setters / Moderators / Examiners.
- All the 5 Faculty members of our department are Ph.D. holder.
- All the members of Faculty have been a part of syllabus framing committee as conveners and members too.
- All the member of Faculty Participate in various committees and render their valuable time towards the college administration
- Faculty members are invited as Chief Guest, member of Selection Committees, guest speakers, resource persons and Judges by various institutions.
- Our Faculty member and alumni have been a part of Television programmer for acquainting people about horticulture practices and social issues.
- Our Faculty members have presented and published research papers and poster at national and International conferences and research Journals.

We run undergraduate course in Botany, which is 3 year graduation course of University Of Mumbai—B.Sc. 6 units course. Students are admitted after completion of Higher Secondary School examination with biology subject.
The applied component at the final year is Horticulture and Gardening with practicals and relevant project work,assignments.
The other subject combinations offered with Botany are Zoology, Chemistry and Physics at the first year level while at second year we offer Zoology Or Chemistry combination
Various supportive workshops, bridge course, competitions and hands on training programs are specially conducted for students related to their graduation course.
Botanical field excursions are regularly conducted to enrich the field botany knowledge
Periodical class tests, seminars related with curriculum topics are organized for benefit of students. They are encouraged and guided for inter collegiate participatory activities like quiz, poster and slogan writing, power point presentations
The graduation course in botany covers fundamental botany topics like life cycle studies ,morphology, systematics, plant physiology, biochemistry, anatomy etc. Applied topics like ecology, biostatistics, herbals and medicinal botany, economic botany, horticulture are included. Advanced topics like molecular biology, cytogenetics, microbiology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, PTC, PHT, food science and nutrition, ethnobotany are also covered.

- Parents’ teachers meeting: -The Parents teachers meet for T.Y.B.Sc. Botany students were organized on 09/07/2016.
- Celebration of Gurupournima -The students of Botany took an initiative and organized a wonderful cultural program as a tribute to their teachers on the auspicious occasion of Gurupournima 19 /07/2016
- Founders’ day celebration– Under ‘Daffodils’associationof Botany Department)Various competitions were organized on different topics related to subject – Flower arrangement,Bio-jewelry, FloralRangoli,Vegetable Carving.
- Exhibition on“Best out of Waste” was organized for the students of the S.Y.B.Sc. Class in total 45 students took part in the competition.
- Skill development program for student organized by the department
- Participation in Government Tree plantation drive at Maharashtra Nature Park on 1st July 2016..
- Teaching Staff of Department of Botany along with student of S. Y. BSc visited the tribal belt of Kosbad Dahnu district for the donation of Clothes. Students distributed clothes to the tribal ladies, gents and children.
