In the year 1954, Biology department was established under the headship of Dr. P. S. Karekar. In 1955, Dr. Nymphea Correa nee Almeida took charge of Biology department when Dr. Karekar was transferred to Fergusson College, Pune. In 1968, Zoology was taken as subsidiary subject for interscience and in 1971 the Department of Zoology was started functioning independently for the undergraduate course. Dr. P. V. Kothare was the first fullfledge Head of the Department till he voluntaily retired from service in 1998. Afterwards Prof Mrs. J. R. Bharucha took over as the next Head of the department till she retired in 2000.
Dr. Mrs. Nandini V. Deshmukh took over the charge of headship and she continued to lead the department till she voluntarily retired from service in 2012. PG courseses like M.Sc. in Oceanography and Ph.D. in Zoology were started during her tenure as HOD. Thereafter, Principal Dr V. N. Magare continued to as HOD till 2017, he was BCUD director, when he left the college to join as Pro-VC of SNDT University. Professor D. D. Sangore is working since then till date as HOD of Department of Zoology. Dr. Mrs. Rupa Phatak, Dr S. M. Chobey and Dr Mrs. Khishori. U. Sinnar karare other esteemed members of Department of Zoology and who got retired or superannuated in various time frame.
Department has 7 sanctioned and approved posts for teaching faculty, but at present there are only 4 full-time regular staff members in the department.
Department has two laboratories for UG and one exclusively for PG; which are appropriately equipped with modern instruments like Oven, Ordinary & BOD incubator, table-top centrifuge and microfuge, digital balance, pH meters, Nephelometer, Conductivity meter, Colorimeters & Spectrophotometers, UV- transilluminators, Vertical & Horizontal electrophoresis apparatus etc. Smart-board and Vertical Laminar air flow cabinet etc are shared with Dept of Botany.
For the study purpose we have well maintained a fish aquarium, butterfly garden, museum collection of preserved- whole and dissected specimens, microscope slides, charts and photograph collection.
Small department library is maintained with books in English as well as Marathi having a collection of Zoology text and reference books and laboratory manuals.
The department is actively involved in organizing national and international conferences and publishing proceedings of the same in the area of Sustainable Development. It is an inter-departmental activity consecutively organized for three years from 2015-2017 in collaboration with the Dept. of Chemistry.
Students are motivated and guided for undertaking small research project activities for intercollegiate and Marathi Vidnyan Parishad competitions and Avishkar research festival of University of Mumbai
Department took the lead in organizing national and international conferences on ‘Sustainable Development’ and also publishing the proceedings of the same thereby providing a platform for budding researchers in presenting their research work and publishing subsequently. Dr. Subhash Donde has successfully published several research papers on one or another dimensions of sustainable development during the preceding lockdown period of 2020-21. 0ur Ex HOD & Principal Dr V. N. Magare is the recipient of ‘State level Best Teacher Award’ as well as ‘Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Award’ of Government of Maharashtra. Our other Ex-HODDr. Nandini V. Deshmukh is recipient of the ‘Best Teacher Award’ of University of Mumbai. She is also founder of Ecopersona, an NGO actively working on environmental awareness and conservation. Dr. Mrs. Deshmukh is also associated with ex-US Vice President Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project and through this she is presently associated with all institutions of Deccan Education Society.
Department has old but well preserved dissected specimens of animals as well as slides of a whole mount of entire tissues such as the kidney of rat.
To facilitate teaching, a fish aquarium and butterfly garden is developed and maintained as an additional infrastructure.
Department also implemented year marked programs like Paryavaran Sapthah, Zoo Fest Week and Sadbhavana Sapthah as extension activities.
We motivate our Students to participate in inter collegiate competitions. As part of innovative teaching and learning methods along with LCD & OHP, Slide projector, Group discussion, Debate and Seminars are also conducted.
We organize Parents- teachers and alumni meetings for the betterment of the student’s performance.
The Department has its own library which has around — books which run by the students under the supervision of the Head of the Department.
Remedial courses for weaker students and Bridge course for the students of F Y B Sc are conducted as and when required.
Continuous Assessment through periodic tests, Unit tests for T.Y.B.Sc students. Supportive stand of department towards non- teaching staffs during the crisis in the form of moral or financial support.
Department regularly organized excursions & field visits, subject related intra-collegiate competitions, workshops, Guest lectures – Slide shows and group discussions related to the subject for the students.
Department has provided teaching experience to their past students who are post graduates and eligible for C.H.B. appointments.
Involvement of staff members in the organization of National/State/University level Conference, Workshops & Seminars in college as well as in other college.
All staff members from the department are involved in the conduct of T.Y.B.Sc, and M.Sc. University exams as Chairperson / Paper setters / Moderators / Examiners.
All the members of the Faculty have been a part of the syllabus framing committee as conveners and members too.
All the member of Faculty Participate in various committees and render their valuable time towards the college administration
Faculty members are invited as members of Selection Committees, Resource persons for workshops and Judges by various institutions.
Our Faculty members have presented and published research papers and posters at National and International conferences and research Journals.
