We run undergraduate course in Botany, which is 3 year graduation course of University Of Mumbai—B.Sc. 6 units course. Students are admitted after completion of Higher Secondary School examination with biology subject.

The applied component at the final year is Horticulture and Gardening with practicals and relevant project work,assignments.

The other subject combinations offered with Botany are Zoology, Chemistry and Physics at the first year level while at second year we offer Zoology Or Chemistry combination

Various supportive workshops, bridge course, competitions and hands on training programs are specially conducted for students related to their graduation course.

Botanical field excursions are regularly conducted to enrich the field botany knowledge

Periodical class tests, seminars related with curriculum topics are organized for benefit of students. They are encouraged and guided for inter collegiate participatory activities like quiz, poster and slogan writing, power point presentations

The graduation course in botany covers fundamental botany topics like life cycle studies ,morphology, systematics, plant physiology, biochemistry, anatomy etc. Applied topics like ecology, biostatistics, herbals and medicinal botany, economic botany, horticulture are included. Advanced topics like molecular biology, cytogenetics, microbiology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, PTC, PHT, food science and nutrition, ethnobotany are also covered.

  • When the city of Mumbai was battling with COVID -19 pandemic, staff and students in the department helped in various ways. Prof. RohanRajapkar along with an NGO supplied food kits and ration to around 130 needy people for six to seven months. He organized and conducted COVID-19 screening tests for people in Sion area. He also donated blood at the BMC blood bank. Prof. Lalita Salvi and her friends helped needy people in her area with COVID-19 kits which contained Sanitizers, Masks, Grocery items, etc. TYBA Geography student OmkarGole voluntarily distributed food kits to factory workers. He participated in 11th Mass Screening program at Ramabai Nagar, Ghatkopar as well as Chembur during 10th-21st June 2020 and became COVID warrior. He volunteered to draw social distancing circles in front of essential goods shops in Village Road area, Bhandup.
  • Geo Nature Club formed by the department carried out the beach cleaning activity at Dadar Beach under the leadership of Prof. RohanRajapkar along with second and thirdyear Geography students. They collected several Lord Ganesh idols and handed over to BMC authorities for proper disposal.
  • On 30th August 2020, “NisargPujan” was organized by Prof. Vrushali Bhalerao and it was attended by staff members and students. They planted various plants around their houses as there was lockdown this activity was conducted individually, and photos were shared. One student made bird shelter as well.
  • On 7th November 2020, guest lecture was organized on “Applications and Employment opportunities in Geoinformatics”. Prof. Dr. Sameer Butala, Associate Professor and Head of Department of Geography at Sundarrao More College, Poladpur, who is extremely knowledgeable in the field, conducted the same and gave some valuable advice to the students.
  • On 14th January 2021, on account of Geography Day, under the guidance of Prof. Vrushali Bhalerao, student prepared cartoons, posters, etc. related to environmental theme. Ms. TanviKoli, TYBA student made an affordable electric invertor using household materials.
  • Under the banner of the Annual Academic Festival “SRUJAN 2020-21”, Department of Geography organized three different activities: 1. 15th February 2021: Guest Lecture on “Hands-on Training in Q-GIS Software” by Prof. Dr. Sameer Butala, it included demonstration and training of Q-GIS software which was attended by 62 students. 2. 15th February 2021: Guest lecture on “Maharashtra Tourism Potential” by Prof. Dr. AnitaAwati which was attended by 121 students. It made the students understand the huge potential to develop tourism in Maharashtra made them aware of different trends of the same. 3. 17th February 2021: Interdisciplinary Guest lecture on “Tissue Culture and Polyhouse Farming – Modern Trend in Agriculture” by Prof. Alisha Pimple which was attended by 144 participants. Prof. Alisha gave guidance on the specific topic and made the biotechnology concepts clear for the Geography students.
  • On 3rd March 2021, National Webinar on “Tourism in India: Explore the Unexplored” was organized by Dept. of Geography, convened by Prof. Vrushali Bhalerao. This webinar was massive success and was attended byparticipants across 25 states all over India. Feedback for this program was received from more than 550 participants. Many unexplored locations from various parts of India were highlighted and the participants had active interaction with the speakers. This webinar was very informative for the students as it was based on their syllabus topic.

On 17th March 2021, Guest lecture on “Mapping Essentials – A case study of Forests in Konkan Region” by Prof. Dr. PrakashDongre, Associate Professor, Dept. of Geography, N. K. College, Malad on occasion of World Forest Day was organized by the Department. It was attended by more than 85 students. This lecture raised awareness about the importance of all types of forests and their importance as a part of ecological balance of the world. It also helped to understand essential of maps using QGIS software.

  • On 9th May 2021, Alumni meet was arranged in order to interact with Alumni and establish connection and networking between current students, staff members and past graduates. It was attended by 34 past students.

1) In “KIRTI AVISHKAR – 2021 Virtual Power Point Presentation on Research Project Proposal” competition at intercollegiate level, five teams were participated. Out of five teams, our three teams won the prizes.

2) Our four T.Y.B.Sc. Statistics students, “Amit Landge”, “Mahant Gaikwad”, “Pradnya Kamble”, “ Sanjay Meriya” have participated in National level competition- The Data Summit 2021 at UG level organised by SIES college of Arts, Science and Commerce, Sion(w), Mumbai.

3) Our S.Y.B.Sc. Students participated in Avishkar Research Convention 2022, conducted by University of Mumbai on virtual platform. The research project titled “The effect of Mindfulness practices on Undergraduate students”.

2020-21

Our four S.Y.B.Sc. and thirteen T.Y.B.Sc. students participated in the Avishkar Research Convention 2021 conducted by the University of Mumbai. The five projects were:

  1. E-LEARNING, IS BENEFICIAL!!
  2. PANDEMIC BRUNT TO THE FEMALE DOMESTIC WORKERS IN MUMBAI SUBURB REGION.
  3. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF MENTAL HEALTH.
  4. STUDY OF SMALL VENDORS ON MUMBAI RAILWAY STATIONS WITH REFERENCE TO HUNGER AND SAFETY.
  5. TRASTIC.

All the projects were done under the guidance of two teachers Dr. S.R. Patgaonkar and Prof. S. M. Marathe. Four S.Y.B.Sc. students participated in the Avishkar Research Convention 2021, presenting “A STUDY OF SPATIAL MARGINALITY OF STREET VENDORS IN MUMBAI – A CASE STUDY OF DADAR AREA” under the guidance of Dr. Harshad Bhosale from the Politics department. Overall, twenty-one students participated in this competition.

2019-20

Our three S.Y.B.Sc. and ten T.Y.B.Sc. students participated in the Avishkar Research Convention 2019 conducted by the University of Mumbai on 14th December 2019. The three projects were:

  1. A Statistical Analysis of Monthly Expenditure of Kirti College Students when en route from Home to College & Vice Versa.
  2. A Statistical Analysis of Impact of Fast Food Habits on Self Esteem.
  3. A Statistical Analysis to Check the Satisfaction of the People with their Food Delivery App.

In the above projects, data collection was done on the Kirti College campus by F.Y.B.Sc. and S.Y.B.Sc. students, and data analysis was conducted by T.Y.B.Sc. students under the guidance of three teachers: Dr. S.R. Patgaonkar, Prof. Pritesh Patil & Prof. Sonali Thik. Out of three projects, two projects were shortlisted for PPT presentation. Our 60% T.Y.B.Sc. students went for post-graduation courses. One of our T.Y.B.Sc. students, Kum. Gloria J. Rumao, has cleared GRE and took admission in U.S. University ‘STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY’ for M.S. course.

2018-19More than 70% of our T.Y.B.Sc. students have scored good marks in the T.Y.B.Sc. examination and went for post-graduation courses.
