The department has a legacy of illustrious teachers and the taught. It is also a co-terminus with the establishment of the college in 1954. Principal M. G. Bhate was the first principal of the college and head of the department of English. Bhate sir was followed by Dr. S. S. Hoskot, Prof. Ms. Shastri, Prof. Ms. Tumkur, Prof. Zarine Arya, Prof. Ishwar Singh and Dr. B. K. Samal.
The department offers six papers in English Literature and is a pioneer in starting a paper VI titled, “Translation Studies: Theory and Practice” for TYBA.
We offer both Undergraduate and Post-graduate courses in English Literature. The U.G programme is a three-year course while the P.G Course is of two-year. For U.G Courses, students with Higher Secondary Education are admitted. For P.G Course, students completing their bachelor’s degree with English as a major subject are admitted. Also, students having a Bachelor’s degree in a subject other than English or an equivalent degree in any stream are admitted, provided they pass the entrance examination conducted as per the norms of the college.
The final year students of the U.G course comprise two project submissions, along with theory examinations. Project work is mandatory for both years of the P.G. course.
Course-related academic visits, workshops, seminars, guest lectures, and competitions are conducted for the students to enhance their knowledge and participative spirit.
For their continuous internal evaluation, tests are periodically conducted for both U.G and PG classes. Students are encouraged to participate in various activities in different capacities.
The U.G course in English incorporates various literary genres like short-story, essays, prose, autobiography, and novel for first-year students. For the second year, it covers genres like drama and poetry. For both the first and second years there is a theoretical part and also a certain textual aspect.
The final year of the U.G. course offers a graded syllabus having three papers related to periods of English literature from the 16th century to the 20th century. These papers cover the social, cultural, political, and literary movements along with the textual aspect. The other three papers cover Literary Criticism, Prosody and Translation Studies. To enhance the social sensibility of the students, there is a special paper like Literature of Protest. Apart from theory, students also get some special practical exposure to translation and prosody.
The first year of the P.G. course incorporates drama, poetry and fiction along with nonfictional prose. It also covers literary theory and language studies. The second year of the PG course offers Indian literature in translation, American literature, New Englishes, New literatures in English and Pandemic literature, thus offering the students a broader spectrum of both Literature and Language studies. It also has interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary aspects and exclusively project-based course for the last semester.
As the department offers specialized courses for both U.G and P.G students, it also offers courses like business communication, for first-year B.Com students and communication skills in English for the first year B.A students. Skills like listening, speaking, reading and writing a honed in such courses. Also, skills like writing business letters, report writing et cetera are developed in a course like Business Communication.
The department of English has been offering the undergraduate programme i. e. Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. in English with six papers of Literature) since its inception. However, the Post-graduate programme i.e. M.A. in English literature was introduced since the year June 2020.
