“Deccan Education Society’s, Kirti M. Doongursee College of Arts, Science and Commerce, located in Dadar (West) [AUTONOMOUS], Mumbai-400028, in the state of Maharashtra is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The University Grants Commission has recognized the College under the Section 2(f) and 12 (B) of the UGC Act of 1956. The College has been certified with ‘A’ grade thrice by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore. As a mark of its Diamond Jubilee, Deccan Education Society sowed the seeds of Bombay College in the city of Mumbai. The foundation stone of Bombay College was laid by Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, the great reformer and champion of women’s cause in India, and college commenced its activities in the year 1954. In the year 1960 (the 75th anniversary of D.E. Society), Bombay College was rechristened as Kirti M. Doongursee College. The naming ceremony was presided over by the then Vice-President of India and eminent educationist, Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. The Society received a handsome donation of ₹2,00,000 from Seth Manoobhai Doongursee in memory of his late son Kirti M. Doongursee, who was a student of this college. While Kirti College is a constituent college of Deccan Education Society, it also belongs to the family of affiliated colleges of University of Mumbai. The objectives of the college resonate firmly with the objectives of Mumbai University and hence the college was decorated with the prestigious ‘Best College’ award in the urban area by University of Mumbai in 2006. Besides undergraduate courses in both aided and unaided categories, the college has a multi-faculty Junior College (Std. XI and XII) and post graduate and Ph.D. courses. Apart from these academic courses, the college provides a number of opportunities for students to develop their extracurricular talents and to realize fully the potential of their personalities as young men and women. We are proud that Kirti College is fulfilling its obligations towards society at large and meeting new challenges along the way.
There has been a constant augmentation of infrastructural facilities with passage of time. The college has an adequate number of well-lit and airy classrooms. Almost all the classrooms are adaptable to the use of electronic teaching aid. The college has 19 laboratories which are equipped to cater to the needs of PG and UG students. Periodic renovation and maintenance of the labs is carried out. Computers with good configuration are provided in computer laboratories, office and departments. The library has two reading halls including separate reading sections for teachers and PG students. The college has developed a ‘Central Instrumentation Facility’ which has advanced instrumentation equipments which are used for carrying quality research by teachers and post graduate students. It has a Common Facility Centre having computers with internet connectivity that aid teachers and post graduate students in research and other learning resources. The latest addition to infrastructural facility is a state of art and aesthetically sound Auditorium. A gymnasium furnished with modern equipment for body toning and fitness is used by athletes and player. The college has a huge playground which is a priceless amenity in a city like Mumbai that is made available for intracollegiate and intercollegiate tournaments like Kabaddi, kho-kho by Gymkhana, parade activities of NCC and cultural events by NSS and other departments. The college boasts of high ranking in the field of sporting events and competitions in the country.
Past and present students are recipient of highest awards of this country which includes Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Maharashtra Bhushan Award which is Maharashtra State’s highest Civilian Award, Rajiv Khel Ratna, Arjun Award, Padmashree to mention a few. Also there are 28 recipient of Shiv Chhatrapati award conferred by government of Maharashtra which is highest award in the field of sports given by state government. The cultural team of students has also obtained many prestigious awards like INT over the years. It is interesting to note that our college is an academic refuge of many visually impaired students for the academic concessions and mentorship provided to them.”
