Defence Journalism

Concept Note

Defence Journalism is a vast canvass. It includes not only war reporting, but also various happenings related to Defence, like, military establishments, procurement, re-organisatioin and strategy.

A lot is happening on these fronts, Military re-organization, integrated theatre commands, appointment of Chief of Defence staff, department of military affairs, indigenization of military equipment, Defence exports, joint exercises and more. All this has a direct impact on people at large. Hence, there is an increased interest amongst people about Defence.

Yet, it has been observed that, India lacks a coherent strategic culture. Developing National strategic culture is another task for Defence Journalism.

It has been observed that, awareness about Defence and strategy is very low in the Indian population. It is important for the masses to know about national Defence and security. Hence the need for trained Defence Journalist.

Today, most of the Defence Journalists are veterans, or Journalists without training and sufficient understanding of Defence. Defence Journalism is a highly specialized function, and their training is critical to form opinions among people at large. Barring Department of Defence initiative, there are a very few organizations which train Defence Journalists in comprehensive manner.

Developing national strategic culture is the mandate of FINS (Forum for Integrated National Security). FINS looks at security in an integrated manner, and is comprised of Veterans, Diplomats, Academicians, and strategic thinkers.

FINS wants to start Defence Journalist course with DES’s Kirti college for existing Journalists, as well as aspirants. This would be a certificate course designed specifically for working professionals as well as young students. This comprehensive course includes inputs on defense organization, military history, strategic thinkers, defense reforms and Journalistic skills. Trained professionals, Defence Journalist and academicians will deliver the course in weekend training modules. This has practical orientation, including projects, assignments, and internships. Specialists with hands on experience will mentor students through this course.
